What are money affirmations?

Money affirmations (or “financial affirmations”) are positive statements that you repeat to yourself to help you achieve your long-term financial goals.

It’s similar to any learned behavior - the more you repeat something, the more likely you are to remember it. Be it playing an instrument or creating a monthly budget, the best way to get better at something is to do it frequently.

The key to money affirmations in particular is that all of these statements need to be framed positively. This is because, while negative reinforcement can get you started, positive reinforcement will keep you going for longer.

Changing your finances isn’t an overnight endeavor (excluding a lottery win). You need to be reminded of the best ways to think and act in order to achieve your goals, thus why money affirmations are so useful.

Unfortunately, there’s one glaring issue that you need to understand before getting started with your affirmations...

The impostor blocking your financial growth

Money affirmations will never help if you don’t first believe that you deserve financial success.

This is a manifestation of impostor syndrome - the belief that you don’t deserve what you have, and/or that people will eventually figure out that you’re a “fraud”. You might know the feeling all too well, considering that up to 82% of people experience it at some point in their life.

You are the only thing stopping you from starting your journey to financial success.

However, we aren’t going to trivialize impostor syndrome. It’s something that takes a lot of time and dedication to get over.

It’s also the one thing preventing your money affirmations from working effectively.

Telling yourself “I deserve my paygrade, and more” is great, but if you’re internally screaming “I’m not worth any of this” your conviction will be skin-deep. The first hurdle to financial growth will just be confirmation, and it will be next to impossible to keep going.

It’s not all bad though. The repetition of your money affirmations is the same thing that can combat impostor syndrome. That is, you’re repeating your own worth and what you deserve until you believe and achieve it.

In other words, if you struggle with impostor syndrome, know that it’ll be tempting to stop improving. The key is to not listen to that voice of doubt and to keep repeating your positive affirmations until that self-doubt has been beaten back.

Why affirmations work

It’s all well and good saying all of this about overcoming self-doubt and talking yourself up, but does it work? How can we prove it?

Well, aside from personal experience, money affirmations tap into the Law of Attraction and general neuroplasticity to bring your statements into reality.

The Law of Attraction is akin to a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you think positively, positive outcomes are more likely. If you think negatively, things are more likely to go wrong.

It’s like saying “every cloud has a silver lining”, only with the positive effects of that backed up with a solid theory.

Neuroplasticity is the more scientific explanation, being how your mind adapts to circumstances based on your experiences. Coupled with how your brain can react the same to imagined situations as real ones, and things get interesting.

For example, when I was a kid I was terrified of heights.

I hated anything to do with high places, from climbing trees to flying to other countries. However, I also loved roller coasters - the adrenaline rush was like nothing else.

One summer my friends and I went to an amusement park and jumped in line for the first ride we found. We couldn’t see what it was due to the tree cover, but decided to take the line for “standing” instead of “seated”.

Turns out, it was the biggest drop tower I’ve ever seen to this day.

By the time we found out what it was, we were too deep into the queue to exit, and the option to go on the ride while sitting down was no longer on the table. So, we took off our shoes (company policy for that ride), stepped on the metal grates that you could see right through, were strapped in, and began our several-hundred-foot climb.

Thinking about how I felt when we realized our error (and the subsequent ride) still makes my palms sweat and my heartbeat go wild.

This is exactly the principle behind neuroplasticity - your brain can make you experience imagined or remembered circumstances as if you’re really experiencing them. When applying that to something more positive, like affirmations, you can train yourself to take the appropriate actions and achieve success merely by repeating the same statements to yourself.

31 money affirmations you need to repeat

When using these affirmations, try to keep to a regular schedule that suits you. Whether it’s by repeating them once every day in the shower or by remembering and saying them when it’s relevant, find what works for you.

Try them out at different times of day and in various situations. See what sticks.

Now, for the affirmations themselves:

  1. I am worthy of my current finances

  2. I am worthy of my desired success

  3. I am valuable

  4. Money is drawn to me

  5. I deserve to make more money

  6. I want more money (and that’s positive)

  7. I am free of resistance to making money

  8. My income can always increase

  9. My wages are worth my time and skills

  10. My current and learned skills will help me make more money

  11. My social & professional network gives me more financial opportunities

  12. There is always a way to make money

  13. I will overcome any financial obstacle

  14. I will achieve my financial goals

  15. I am sensible with my spending

  16. I can stick to a budget

  17. I am knowledgeable about my financial commitments

  18. I make careful investments

  19. I can be free of debt

  20. I am in control of my money

  21. My finances let me lead a happier life

  22. My assets are increasing in value

  23. I welcome unexpected success

  24. I welcome new sources of income

  25. I am working towards my own financial success

  26. My current money problems won’t stop me from working towards a better life

  27. I am generous with my money

  28. Through thoughtful generosity, more money will come back to me

  29. I can positively affect the world with my money

  30. My life is balanced outside of the pursuit of money

  31. I am improving my finances, but it does not define who I am

All of these may not be true at the minute - student debts and mortgages are incredibly common, for example. However, the point of these affirmations is to get you thinking positively about your current and potential finances, and thus increase your chances of making your money affirmations come true.

This is why the focus of many of these affirmations is to separate yourself from the negative stigma associated with money.

It doesn’t help you in any way, and will actively prevent you from making your own situation better.

Again, when 77% of Americans worry about their financial situation, it’s hardly the time to stop yourself from getting out of that group. Think positive, be smart with your financial decisions, and affirm your own wealth.

How to make affirmations into reality

You now have the money affirmations you need to get your head working for, not against you. The next step is taking that foundation and building on it to make your statements into a reality.

There are a few obvious things that you can do to help you achieve financial success and freedom in this way.

You could start by looking for a higher-paying job. While this isn’t always possible, the increasing opportunities to work remotely provide a great opportunity to see what your talents are worth globally instead of locally.

Taking on extra training is another thing which can boost your job and promotion prospects. Whether it’s through your current workplace or by taking courses in your spare time, it’s never bad to expand your skillset.

You may even find something that you want to do full time by branching out in this way!

Creating a budget and carefully tracking your expenses (weekly, monthly, yearly, and one-off) is a great way to know exactly where your money is going. Through that knowledge you can then cut out the expenses you don’t need (eg, subscriptions you don’t use).

However, the quickest and easiest way to boost your financial stability and freedom is to know, track, and improve your credit score.

We know that a credit score can be daunting - it’s a seemingly magic number that governs how lenders see you. It, plus your income, almost solely dictates how much you can borrow for general loans and even your mortgage.

These might seem like things you don’t need to think about, but they’re a crucial part for you to be financially stable and free of debt while leading the lifestyle you want.

Let’s face it, houses are expensive. Very few people can buy one without some kind of loan, and sometimes you might need help for general living.

For example, if you rack up medical bills, are you sure that you would be able to borrow the money you need to cover them?

Then there’s the pain of growing it in the first place.

One of the best ways to grow your credit score is to have a credit card that you consistently use and pay off. This proves to lenders that you can consistently repay whatever you want to borrow.

How do you get a credit card? By already having a good credit score!

You can see the issue here - you’ll likely need a credit card to get a good credit score, but to get a credit card you need to already have that good score.

It doesn’t have to be a nightmare.
